平成29年9月10日(日)早朝、フィールドワークでシンガポールに滞在している学生のうち2名がメイヨー・クリストファー准教授(コミュニケーション学科)と一緒に約5キロの距離で「歴史ラン」をしました。第二次世界大戦の記念碑、シンガポールを創立したラッフルズ氏を記念する像、ラッフルズ氏がシンガポールに上陸した地点、 インド総督ダルハウジー・マーキスのため1850年に立てられたダルハウジー記念碑などを見学しました。シンガポールと日本の歴史上の関係とシンガポールの植民地時代を記憶・記念する課題について英語で一緒に考える機会でした。

Early in the morning on Sunday, September 9th, Associate Professor Christopher Mayo (Communication Department) went on a history run with two of the Communication Department students visiting Singapore for fieldwork this week. The sites they visited included a WWII war memorial, the Dalhousie Obelisk, statues of Stamford Raffles (the founder of Singapore) from the 19th century, and the location where Stamford Raffles is thought to have first landed in Singapore. The history run was a great opportunity to learn firsthand about the complicated history shared by Japan and Singapore, and some of the challenges faced in memorializing the colonial past.
